BinFS
The development has started

I just (december 2005) decided to start the development of BinFS. BinFS stands for 'Binary newsgroup File System' and the goal is to create an extension for the Windows Explorer that will add a virtual drive where you can add folders that are maped to a newsgroup.

The development is still in the investigation stage. So far I am thinking of the folowing criteria

  • The windows explorer will get an extra drive letter that can be accesed by any application on that system like it's a regular drive. sources: Explorer Namespace extensions, Virtual encrypted drive
  • The user can add newsgroups as a folder to this drive letter.
  • Files can be found using a scheduled scan or ad hoc search
  • There will be support for nzb files. These files can be placed anywhere on the system. Opening such a file will act as if the original file was opened from the newsserver.
  • Compatability with current binary files in newsgroups. This will mean that a file will be posted the same way as files are posted now. Sources: NNTP library, NNTP using Indy, NNTP component
  • Files will be attached using the Yenc format. Sources: Binary file encoding/decoding, Yenc class

  • Parity information will be send as one seperate file that is send at the same time as the main file. The extension par3 will be used for this
  • Parity check and fixing the file will be done at the moment that part is available. Source: Parchive
  • This is still in a very early stage. I am still drawing out the concept. Let me think this over and gather some reasources about these issues. If anyone has .NET code that covers any of these points then feel free to inform me about it.

    Tip

If you are looking for an excelent binary news server then have a look at Giganews. They offer a great speed and they have a retention of about 70 days!
